What the Signs Say: 108 Road Words in 23 Countries

Checked 7 October 2026 against each government's, city's or operator's own page · skynomad

Verdict

The words that cost money are on the plate under a no-entry sign, on the toll lane and on the fuel pump.

A plate such as Anlieger frei lets in only people with business on that street. Gasolio is diesel in Italy. A red ZTL attiva panel means the zone is in force. Each word below is written as the sign writes it, with what it means for you and what to do.

The words stay in the local language, because that is what you will read on the road. If your browser translates this page, the words themselves are left as they are. Across the site, a word with a dotted underline links here.
