Verdict

Nothing to buy: Norway's road tolls and road ferries read your plate and send the bill to the owner, sometimes with a fee added.

Registering a foreign car with Epass24 avoids the fee but gives no discount.

Norway's AutoPASS road and city tolls read the plate. You don't have to register a foreign car.

What catches visitors out is the post: a Norwegian toll invoice arrives after you are home, with a fee added for finding you.

Let Norway Bill You, or Register With Epass24

If you don't register, the owner gets an invoice, and a fee of €5.10 to €14 may be added for looking up the owner abroad.

Registering with Epass24 avoids that fee but gives no discount. Only an AutoPASS agreement with a tag gives 20% off.

Budget for Oslo's Toll Ring

Oslo's toll ring, from 1 January 2026, costs a petrol or diesel car 38 NOK, or 47 NOK in the weekday rush hours of 06:30–09:00 and 15:00–17:00. An electric car pays 21 or 26 NOK. You pay once an hour at most.

Ferries on Norwegian Roads Bill by Camera Too

Some main roads cross fjords by ferry. A foreign car is photographed on boarding and invoiced at full price by post, with a 35 NOK fee. You can register a bank card with FerryPay instead, still at full price.

On the E39, Mortavika to Arsvågen costs 178 NOK for a petrol or diesel car up to 6 m, driver included, and 124.60 NOK for an electric car. The crossing takes about 24 minutes.

Coming through Sweden, its city tolls bill the same way: tolls in Sweden.

Let the cameras do the work and keep an eye on your post. Every price on this page was checked on AutoPASS's, Fjellinjen's and the ferry operator's own sites on 5 October 2026.
