How Much Fuel Costs on a Road Trip in Europe

Checked 5 October 2026 against the EU's Weekly Oil Bulletin and Italy's station prices · skynomad

Your car: all 10 pages

Verdict

Fuel for a trip costs the litres you burn in each country, at that country's price. Where you fill up decides how many of them you pay at the higher price.

Pick two cities, your fuel and your car's figures. The calculator splits the route by country, prices each part at the EU's latest average for that country, and tells you where to fill up.

Country averages from the EU's Weekly Oil Bulletin for the week of 28 September 2026; Italian station prices published 4 October 2026; French station prices of 5 October 2026. What you pay on the day depends on the station, the road and the hour.

Where to fill up

  1. Stop 1, Luxembourg, before you leave it, about 360 km in. 24 litres at €2.095, €50.
  2. Stop 2, France, about 1,060 km in. 15 litres at €2.371, €36. Only enough to reach Spain, where fuel is cheaper.
  3. Stop 3, Spain, about 1,300 km in. 11 litres at €1.934, €21.

You buy 50 litres on the way for €107 and arrive with about 100 km of range left.

Diesel at 6.5 litres per 100 km, 800 km on a full tank, leaving 100% full. Refuelling before the range drops under 100 km (a little later if a cheaper country is just ahead) and arriving with at least 100 km. The fuel cost of the drive is the litres used in each country at that country's price; the fuel you set off with is part of it.

Example without JavaScript: Amsterdam to Barcelona in a diesel car using 6.5 litres per 100 km, with 800 km on a full tank. Fill Up Before the Border When the Next Country Costs More

In the EU's figures for the week of 28 September 2026, diesel cost €2.526 a litre in the Netherlands and €1.932 in Hungary. Petrol ranged from €1.729 in Hungary to €2.465 in the Netherlands.

Neighbours differ too. Across the border from France into Spain, diesel was 44 cents a litre cheaper: €21.85 on a 50-litre tank.

So the cheap country on your route is where to fill the tank, and the dear one is where to buy only what gets you across. The calculator does this for you: at each stop, if a cheaper country comes within one tank, it buys just enough to reach it.

Leave the Motorway to Fill Up

The averages above are for all of a country's stations. On the motorway you usually pay more.

ADAC compared more than 14,000 German stations from 6 to 19 April 2026. Super E10 and diesel both cost 33 cents a litre more at Autobahn stations than off the motorway. ADAC's advice is to leave the Autobahn to fill up.

Italy's own station file shows the same pattern, though smaller. In the file published on 4 October 2026, self-service petrol averaged €2.064 on the motorway and €2.050 elsewhere; diesel €2.268 against €2.244. The dearest motorway station charged €2.899 for diesel, the cheapest €2.120.

The fuel prices page has the dearest and cheapest motorway stations, and the brands, where a government publishes them.

Add Your Own Price for 98, Premium Diesel or Switzerland

The EU publishes one petrol price, for 95 octane, one for diesel and one for LPG. It publishes nothing for 98 octane, premium diesel or HVO, and Switzerland is not in its bulletin at all.

If you fill with one of those, or you are crossing Switzerland, open "Reserve, and the price per litre" and type the price from the pump or the station's app. Your price replaces ours for that country, and it stays in the link if you send it to someone.

Check the label inside your filler flap before you fill: the petrol and diesel page explains E5, E10, B7 and XTL. Switzerland does not currently sell E10, according to the Swiss motoring club TCS.

Where the Prices Come From

The country prices are the European Commission's Weekly Oil Bulletin: the average pump price, taxes included, that each government reports for its country every week. We take the newest week once a month, so the figures here are for reference only. On the day, the price at the pump depends on the station, the road and the hour.

Distances are the same motorway routes as the EV trip calculator, worked out in advance from OpenStreetMap data.
