The Cost of Driving in France: Tolls and Fuel for Each Drive (2026)
Verdict
Calais to Lyon costs about €189.22 one way in a petrol car: €76.30 in tolls and €112.92 in fuel for 785 km.
On every drive below, the fuel costs more than the tolls. Add €5.11 for a Crit'Air sticker if you will enter a low-emission zone, and the Channel crossing if you come from Britain.
The cost of a drive in France is mostly two things: the motorway tolls, which are fixed, and the fuel, which depends on your car. The table adds them up for the drives most visitors make, with this month's French fuel prices.

Tolls: the operators' 2026 tables for a car, as on France tolls. Fuel: 6.5 litres per 100 km at France's average price in the EU's bulletin for the week of 28 September 2026 (petrol €2.213, diesel €2.371 a litre). Distance: the motorway route in this site's road data, which can differ a little from the tolled route.
Driving the same route back doubles it. To add up several drives, or to see where the toll is paid, use the France toll calculator. For your own car and route, through any country, use the fuel cost calculator.
Spend Less on Fuel
Fuel on the motorway costs more than in town. In the French government's file for 5 October 2026, diesel averaged €2.458 a litre at motorway stations and €2.374 elsewhere, €4.20 more on a 50-litre tank. The station-by-station figures are on fuel prices in France.
The One-Off Costs
- Crit'Air sticker: €5.11 posted abroad, only from the official site, certificat-air.gouv.fr. You need it in any city with a low-emission zone. See Crit'Air and the ZFE zones.
- The Channel crossing: fares change with the date and time, so check them with the operators: LeShuttle, P&O Ferries, DFDS and Brittany Ferries. What you need for the trip from Britain is on driving from the UK.
- The kit the law asks for: a high-visibility vest and a warning triangle. See what you need to drive in France.
Every toll comes from the operators' own 2026 tables and every fuel price from the EU's Weekly Oil Bulletin, linked below. Hotels, food and parking are not included.
